Microfig-scale Cherno Alpha is ready to kick kaiju butt

Jason Corlett spent 70 hours making this faithful replica of the hulking Cherno Alpha jaeger from Pacific Rim. Standing almost three feet tall, this build looks ready to cancel the apocalypse all on its own.

Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne

There’s been something of a renaissance in computer rendered Lego builds lately, and leading the charge is the prolific Garry (Garry_rocks).

Using parts in colors that have never been available toes the line of what I consider cheating, but there’s no question that the results are stunning. I’m particularly fond of these two fearsome builds from the Warhammer 40k universe.

Twins of destruction

This pair of mechs by Simmon Kim had me question if what I was seeing was indeed made out of Lego. The builder’s use of custom decals elevates these models to a new level of realism, giving them the quality of seemingly coming from a model kit.

Mechs on a Train

legorobo:waka shares this awesome armored train carrying a squad of tough looking mecha. The train’s brutal lines and tank turrets evoke a dieselpunk style, with just the right amount of detail mixed in alongside the solid slab-like surfaces.

Friday Night Fights (Round 37)

Welcome back fight fans, to Sin City Nevada for another round of Friday Night Fights! Tonight it’s a classic match of bots not seen since the rock’em sock’em days of old. Let’s go to the tale of the tape.

SD Command Gundam by Moko

Growing up in Japan in the 80’s, one of my favorite toys (other than LEGO, of course) was little plastic models of the SD Gundam characters. Moko (Flickr) might be a bit younger than I am, but we do share a love of these adorable little mecha.

Don’t be deceived by the diminutive source material — this is a substantial model with an amazing amount of detail. Just look at the subtle grooves around Gundam’s mouth!

You can run, but you won’t get far

Milo_Z comes back from hiatus with a vengeance, posting this killer mech inspired by concept art from St Theo. Possessing a gangly greeblyness that’s not often seen in mecha, this is the last thing any fugitive would want to see on their trail.

The color combinations are particularly nice, with each color tied to a different function on the mech. And despite the spindly appearance, it even fits a fig!

Green Machine

While the mech in the foreground might be the focus of this latest scene from Nooreuyed, the dense foliage and vibrant greenery of the jungle background is the real star here. The action isn’t lacking either, with muzzle flashes and splashing water all combining to really bring this scene to life.

Tractors without wheels

I’ve admired Captain Eugene‘s military LEGO models for a while, but I’d never noticed that he’s quite an accomplished mech builder. In fact, I nearly overlooked this pair of fantastic industrial robots because I thought from the thumbnail that they were plastic miniatures.

And then I noticed the minifigs.

I think that building military models gives you a very solid sense of the purpose that every mechanical detail has; greebles are great, but believable details trump greebs any day. It’s clear that Eugene has invested every detail in these two mechanical monstrosities with purpose, and that makes a huge difference.

Three of a kind

This gorgeous lineup of mecha from David Steeves (SuperhardcoreDave) offers three flavors of destruction for the price of one. Dave maintains a nice cohesiveness of design across all three, even though the details of each are radically different.

Retro-future is retro-tastic!

Newcomer Dan McPharlin dives into the scene with a stable of mecha and spaceships from a future that never was. Combining the rounded bubbliness of MaK with the vivid colorschemes of ’70s scifi, Dan uses his artistic background to bring these builds to life.

One aspect I appreciate about these builds is the lack of armament on any of them. While I know firsthand how tempting it is to slap some colossal guns onto every applicable surface, it’s refreshing to see a vision for the future where giant mecha are used as explorers rather than wrecking balls.

When the Mechs Get Going

We see a lot of mechs around here, so I’m always keen on ones that stand out visually. This beauty by piratesxlovexrum does just that with this action shot of it offloading a full barrage.
